    Wow, I learned a ton of information in those last few posts.

    Sandman S
    5/24 Bought
    6/27 Check cashed (not happy about that month of time)
    12/17 Contacted my FL congressman
    ??? Approved

    The ATF says they are averaging 7 months right now, which seems accurate based on the tracker.
    I hope for a better future for this process, because this is painful and I haven’t even been waiting as long as many others on here.

    Purchased – 1/11/2018
    Check Cashed – 1/26/2018
    Moved to FBI Background Check – 10/2018

    Now I’m stuck in the black hole…how do I contact my rep to get this looked at? I am looking at 1 year in just a few weeks. I am an NRA Instructor and I have purchased several handguns and rifles this year. Why do those “checks” take a few minutes and a suppressor take MONTHS!?!?!

      Justin,

      Don’t mess with your Rep, they are usually worthless (I know). Go to your US Senator’s website, if 2A friendly.
      1. Find the “help with government agency” section.
      2. Select “other government agency” probably won’t have ATF/NFA (mine did not)
      3. Fill in contact info & write a brief statement of your problem, push send.
      4. They will mail out release forms to you, sign and write a full description of issue (stress the waiting for FBI background check.), mail back.

      Should get contacted via email or phone by a Senate aid from your district, work with him/her best you can and they should be able to get shit done. They usually check with ATF first (useless), then move on to DOJ (not useless).

      I did the exact same thing when stuck in FBI purgatory and the process took about a week. Tree was rattled and both my 2/6/18 stamps fell out. One day later I called NFA for status check, approved imagine That!

      DOJ gets real nervous with a Senate inquiry, NFA gets real nervous with a DOJ inquiry…

      Gone through this process a couple times myself, it worked well when stalled in FBI.

      Hope this helps.

        Justin- what’s he best description to write to them? “My NFA item has been stuck in the FBI background check for over 3 months.”?? My check cashed 3/21/18, went to fbi background in 9/18. Others have been getting stamps back 2 months ago that we’re cashed in mid and late April after me.

    Purchased my AAC762 through Silencer Shop on 3/19/18, Check was cashed on 4/29/18, Tax Stamp came in to local FFL on 12/24/18. This means that govt took 7 mos and 26 days. This is the new average with e-filing.
    All in all, just in time for Christmas which is what I hoped.

      Uh, that’s not e-filing, just because you completed it online. After you complete the online stuff, SS still prints the paper forms which are physically mailed to the ATF.

      Only form 1 is being e-filed. That would be a form 4.

    NFA Branch today was unable to transfer my call to my examiner per the Govt Shutdown. So clearly the shutdown id affecting some things NFA related. My particular case seems to be affected simply bc my Form 4 was approved on Dec. 19th and as of today (1/2/19), no stamp. Which isn’t terribly long but its clear to me that if my examiner is not in the office, examiners are unable to stamp and send out approvals to their mailing dept. Whatever..

    I’m having a hard time getting excited about suppressors now that the waits are going way up again for the trusts. As in if I buy another, is it a 7, 8, 9, over a year wait again? This is staying stupid. Without knowing exact numbers, it’s hard to tell if it’s our fault for requesting too many. Or if there is some other reason why times are spiking up again.

    I still remember thinking “Ugh, 3 months” before learning about 41f…

    If they keep this up, the market for solvent cleaners and maglites will ramp up.

    ATF cashed my check on 11/17/2017, and I am still waiting for approval. It was an F4 trust filing and I have purchased 1-2 suppressors under this trust already

      Yes, for a week so far. It has been over a year since the govt. minions cashed the check, and it should have been approved long ago

        I don’t feel bad. First one was ten months. Second about 7. Now on 7 for the third and a month for a Form 1 Efile. Probably close when they shut down.

        No doubt the fees paid for the stamps more than cover the costs of the NFA processing. That is user funded and should have remained open. 1,600,000 applications last year

        By their own records..

        The above bar graph depicts the number of NFA firearms processed from applications captured in the NFRTR by Fiscal Year from FY 2005 to FY 2014. The number of NFA firearms the NFA Division processed were:
        147,484 NFA firearms in FY 2005;
        296,127 NFA firearms in FY 2006;
        563,127 NFA firearms in FY 2007;
        981,303 NFA firearms in FY 2008;
        834,328 NFA firearms in FY 2009;
        828,462 NFA firearms in FY 2010;
        992,975 NFA firearms in FY 2011;
        1,112,041 NFA firearms in FY 2012;
        1,152,163 NFA firearms in FY 2013;
        1,383,677 NFA firearms in FY 2014;
        1,426,211 NFA Firearms in FY 2015,
        2,538,397 NFA Firearms in FY 2016,
        1,607,952 NFA Firearms in FY 2017. at $200 per????

      It’s almost always the FBI background check. They do these thing at their leisure. One guy sent two off in the same envelope. One approved in 8 months and the second was 27 months.

    Anyone else get the mail from ASA basically saying approvals are on hold until the gov shutdown is over? Apparently Bank of America processes the checks, of course that part still works. But paperwork is on hold. 🙁

      An abridged version…

      The American Suppressor Association (ASA) is the unified voice of the suppressor industry. Our mission is to unite and advocate for the common interests of suppressor manufacturers, distributors, dealers, and consumers. To accomplish our mission, our principal initiatives focus on state lobbying, federal lobbying, and public education.

    AFAIK no one knows for a fact if the shutdown is slowing approvals.

    They are closed for the shutdown.

    Until this deadlock is resolved and the ATF is back up. I don’t think there’s any point in buying NFA items. Basically spending your money elsewhere or saving up for a better item seems more logical. Else your $$$ just gets tied up even…. longer…..

    At this point I’d think sellers might start thinking about discounting stamps or eating them for more expensive suppressors.

    I’d like to know too. Got a couple checks cashed mid may and it looks like we have a 3 week window here until lord knows what happens.

    So much work for a metal tube with some pieces of metal with holes in them inside it.

    I called last Friday (1 Feb) and got a recording that Form 4 status would not be given as a result of catching up from the shutdown. Then I called back today (4Feb) and I just got the tone of death. Anybody get thru?

Call ATF said it’s at the FBI and we don’t have a number you have too look it up. Explained that I have already talked to them and they said call ATF. She said well I’m sorry I don’t know what to tell you. This is B. S.

    Govt. efficency at its best. Seems any attempt to streamline the process gets sshot down. When mtiple applications are sit up then you know it’s screwed up.

    I can see them chaining the examiners to their desks.
