I’m 130 days in. I submitted my Form 4 for my KAC Mark 23 suppressor June 6th and it was received June 17th. I sure hope I’m one of those lucky guys who gets a speedy approval.

Believe me, you should call just to check if it is in “Pending” status. I waited 7 months to check and the LGS didn’t even submit my Form 4 and lost my checks. Re-submitted my checks and forms, myself. Result, 2 years later received my SBR and Hybrid 46!!!

Purchased 2 Suppressors on 12/10/18. Individual Form 4.
Called today and the gentlemen at the ATF told me both were approved today, 10/30/19. What luck! This is only the 2nd time I’ve called since purchasing.
    Days to Approval: 324
Now it’s just the wait for the Dealer to receive the paperwork. It’s already unbearable. Lol
Best of luck to all others that have been waiting for as long or longer than I have!

    Form 4 individual
    ATF received 2/2/2019
    Approval 10/21/2019 (261 days)

Waiting for dealer to receive paperwork.

Probably wait for the eform 4 to come back before I get another suppressor.

Free Silencerco Octane 45 from the promotion mid 2018…

    Submitted via Silencershop kiosk 06/21/19
Notification of Tax Stamp Cashed 07/08/19

After reading how fast they were getting approved here, I called the NFA today (10/31/19) and found out I was approved on 9/5/19… I quickly called my local shop and they confirmed that they haven’t received the stamp yet, so coming up on almost 2 months for NFA > Local Shop, almost as long as Cash > Approval (which is a very strange sentence to type out…)

It’s so cold out here I won’t be using it anytime soon anyway, so I’ll give it another week before I call back.

This is what I do not understand. You get your silencer in 3 months, I am still holding at 420 days. This makes no sense at all. I’m glad you got yours so quickly. I already have 1 suppressor from 2018, so what makes it so difficult to approve another one. It’s like throwing darts at a dart board. You got me on the selection process on which applications to take and approve. I think the feds are using a physic to select applications.

I feel your pain, the new system went live in June. My check was cashed May 22. I missed the new system by 9 days, so looks like a year of waiting for me!

It sucks, I know. I waited 240 for my last one and as soon as I saw that the new system was working quickly, I put in for another. However, if you’re > 400 days, I surmise that you’re either caught in FBI black hole (received an FBI delay on the BG check process) or something went wrong with your application. You should call and try to work your way to your examiner.

I did not know that a new system was in place in June of 2019. That explains a lot of things. I agree that they will leave those in the old system, and anything new will go into the new system. As you said, why re-key in all of that old data. I just have to let things play out. I have called 3 times and Feds say they are waiting to assign it to an examiner. Which means wait your turn in line. LOL!

From looking at the replies, I have surmised, that all new applications, sent in after the new system went into effect in June, went into the new system. And, all previous applications stayed in the old system. I can’t
imagine them going back and re-entering the old data. The new system is just a lot faster. This is only happening with the individual forms and not the trusts, which are over a year now.

FYI, there’s no such thing as a form 4 e-file at this time. If you submitted via Silencershop, it’s still a paper form. Since your submission was in June, but the majority of the fast-track approvals are now showing up as late July to mid-August, your form is probably in the old system and you’ll be looking at another 3-4ish months. Sorry for the bad news. The lady on the phone also hears your question all day every day, fyi. So she’s not going to give you actual information. Rather, she’s likely going to tell you some outlandish date so you’ll stop calling and wasting her time…

I am pushing 425 days. Called 3 times. Hasn’t been assigned to an examiner.I am guessing that I am caught between the old system and the new system. So who knows, the Feds get to it, when they get to it. I just hope I am not like that poor dude that was out 604 days.He did get his approved, but 604 days, you got to be kidding.

Form 4 Individual for Dead Air Armament/Dead Air Sandman L.
    Submitted December 14, 2018
Check Cashed January 28, 2019 (Took long probably due to the 2019 Gov. Shutdown)
    Approved November 4, 2019
Today is November 6 and, of course, I’m awaiting my dealer to receiver the Tax Stamp.
Total time between Check Cashed and Approval Date: 281

I’m hearing now that people are filing and receiving approvals as quick as three months. Is this true? If so, I’ll probably buy another suppressor while the turnarounds are so quick.

I’m pretty sure its true. I bought a suppressor before I saw all these quick times pop up so I didnt even know about it till my had already started. Then I sawthese approvals with check cashed dates around mine so I called in and found out it got approved. I gotta check my math but I believe it took 70 days to get approved. I think anything after June will be fast tracked and anything before that is gonna be normal wait times or worse. Cant wait till 2 months is the norm and we start hearing about these lucky bastards that get theirs approved in a couple weeks.

how are you guys checking the status of “check cashed” “approved”…. are you calling repeatedly for updates or is there another way to be notified?

As far as “check cashed”, you can just look at your bank statement each month to determine when they cashed your check. With online banking it’s a little easier. I’ve been waiting on an SBR approval since my check was cashed on April 11. As for “approval” or “pending” status you’ll have to call for an update (you’ll need the serial # of the item in question). So far I’ve resisted the temptation to call.

To add to checking your bank statement, statement above, I will state that your bank statement may not have the standard information on it as my 1st one was listed as something other than the check # generic statement. It had some electronic transfer that I kinda skipped over at fuurst on my statement.
My second one I did through SS and I got an email statement that the check (CC) via SS was cashed.
So, supposedly the process really starts after that, I mean the waiting process.

        Hopefully my statement helps.

ok, thanks. i paid with Money Orders so i could get the money out of my account ahead of time and not see any surprise transactions.. guess i wont know if they cashed it unless they explicitly tell me. Also, hopefully i got lucky and they come back in 8 weeks like i’ve been hearing from others that submit after June. i’m waiting on my SBR and suppressor both submit in September.

i’ve heard conflicting information. is a form 4 just a standard process or could my wait change between it being a suppressor vs. a firearm?

To my understanding,a Form 4 is a Form 4, and all items on it are treated the same whether that includes suppressors or SBR’s. Interestingly, it seems like SBR’s in general are fading to the background (perhaps as a result of “pistol braces” and the like) and the vast majority of Form 4’s being submitted are for suppressors. I haven’t seen definitive data one way or the other, and I’d be interested to hear if supressors and SBR’s are processed differently but as I stated I suspect “a Form 4 is a Form 4” and there is no difference.

Right now SBR’s are absolutely fading because of braces. However, I’d suspect that arm braces will be outlawed sometime in the next 5 years. All the pistol owners will be in for a rude awakening the first time one of them is used in a mass shooting and the president has the ATF redefine what a stock is and isn’t. If they can do that with a bump stock, you’d better believe they’ll do it with an arm brace if they get a chance. The great thing right now is that, in part because of arm braces, eform 1’s are running 2-3.5 weeks generally. So my suggestion would be get it while the getting’s good. The moment they outlaw braces that wait will shoot up to 4-6mo. I just did 2 efile form 1’s and they were done in 3.5 weeks and 3 weeks respectively. I’d rather not dance around the law with an arm brace even if it helps me not register a firearm. Also, if the ATF releases one opinion letter stating that you can no longer shoulder it because that constitutes ‘intent,’ everyone will be back on the SBR bandwagon.

I haven’t been able to make that phone call yet. Day 316 with no news.

Well here it goes. I should’ve called when I first mentioned it. I made the phone call early this afternoon, told the person my info and it was approved on Oct 5. I told the guy I did not receive a phone call from the dealer and he told me what I needed to do if they didn’t receive the stamp. Said have a nice day and the call was over within a minute. Called the dealer next and sure enough my stamp was waiting for me. Apparently a voicemail either decided not to work or I inadvertently deleted it. I have no reason to doubt the dealer did not call. They do not benefit by holding onto the suppressor for an extended period of time. I just wish they would’ve attempted another call. Today was day 340. It was actually ready for pickup on day 306. Lesson learned. So for me it was…

    Purchased 12-27-18
    Check cashed 2-5-19
    Approved 10-5-19

Check cashed feb 26-2019. 278 days and still no approval. This system needs an enema. It’s interesting how approvals seem to have no chronological order. Guys getting them back from the March-September time frame last month. I figured this being my third would speed the process up a little

Well we’re going to back to the old system, ATF is canceling the expedited program after folks submitted trusts started complaining of individuals getting quick approvals (due to less complexity of Individuals vs Trusts). Gun owners are their own worst enemies at times.

Wow. That is absolutely asinine. I’ve been pending since April 11 so I was on the old system anyway, but I was looking forward to future Form 4’s if the new system continued to smooth out and expedite approvals. Every time something starts going good for firearms owners, someone has to say something stupid to invoke the wrath of the ATF (people sending in letters asking about shouldering pistol braces a few years ago comes to mind also).
