I am excited to see what happens with approval dates as the glut of pre-41f starts to clear the system.

I’m hoping they speed up. Just submitted my first two NFA items…Daniel Defense 300blk SBR and Surefire suppressor.

Before everybody starts getting too excited…this basketball in the garden hose has yet to hit. Upon conversation with several folks who are in that submission pile, they have pending dates of the first two weeks of August and one has a mid September pending date. They (5 people) all purchased from 7-11 July. Yes that is a small sampling but it still is indicative that the huge plug has yet to hit.

Ya the next month or so should be “telling” of the progress on it. My next is pending October 19th so I’m a long way off…

My dealer told me he had a bunch of post 41f approvals…which I was a little suspect about and should have asked for proof…but I was busy filling out another Form 4.

      shrugs

From what I learnt speaking with 5 different people while tracking my 07/12/16 pending (approved 05/06/2017) the motherlode of last July’s approvals date stamped pre 41F are approx 300k submissions with a check cashed/pending date beginning 07/19/2016…

I have been buying the needed accessories and threaded barrels for the last 6 months! lol. I still need to work up a subsonic load for my blackout though. I tried a couple but they weren’t extracting at all.

I had similar problems with extraction and cycling. Ended up being bullet seat depth. I am loading cast 208 gr. They need to be seated what seems like excessively deep, but work. Currently the load I am using is IMR4198 11gr, seating to 1.195″. Hope that helps, good luck. I am picking up my can today finally. Tomorrow I will see for sure.

This is definitely a post 41f approval, however I could be a fluke or luck of the draw when they pass out stacks of forms mine happened to be close to the top.

The funny thing is I called today at 10:00am eastern time and was advised still pending. My LGS called at 5:00pm with the good news

Bound to be some confusion and boxes mixed up. What does happen is that the trusts are reviewed prior to approval so those without trusts (individual) often times go to other examiners as the trust does not need to be reviewed…..

But they do follow the first in, first out policy as best they can …… which means nothing good for those behind the bubble

Glass half full says….in about 3 months when the basketball makes it through the hose …wait times will drop down to maybe 6 months?

I don’t work at the ATF nor did I stay at a holiday inn express last night. These statements have not been approved by the FDA. Executive producer Dick Wolf.

Reality: It took from 1 Oct 2015 to 1 June 2017 to process 187,000 applications (that is 8 months) there are 184,000 applications remaining……..that will take at least 8 more months to process them, not the 3 months it took to submit them, if you use the preceding applications process time.

Sooooooooo, after the nine more months to process those applications (which would be about 16-18 month wait time for those applications submitted 1 Oct 2016) it should start to drop off and after about a year (from now) should be down around 4 to 5 months.

not true, they hired a bunch more examiners and are working around the clock. In my previous post I’ve indicated that i was told approvals were made over the holiday weekend. They are processing thousands of applications per day… so you can’t compare the data from 2 years ago and apply it today.

Real reality, the throughput has increased a lot since 2015. I think 3-4 months for the remaining pre 41f stuff, definitely speculative, is about right. Then I think the average approval time will spiral down pretty quickly to about 3 months. So the Omega that I purchased 03/20/17 should be approved 11/20/17

Would really like to see feed back from Silencer Shop updated in this forum being they were one of the largest players in NFA class 3 sales. An informative picture can be seen just from stamps received showing the weekly number of stamps received post/pre 41F, Form #, electronic or paper.

    purchase 4/23/16
    checked cashed 7/27/16
    stamp in hand 7/7/17
Similar to Geclevel above, likely bs story from LGS about inventory at time of purchase. But neither here nor there at this point. Put some rounds down range this afternoon and had a good time.

For everyone else out there buying their first NFA item, GET A SERIAL NUMBER FROM THE DEALER WHEN YOU GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY SO YOU CAN HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE.

The dealer said he was going to the bank to get a cashier’s check as soon as I left and that he would mail everything in that afternoon. My best guess is the can he showed me was a floor model and he Form 3’ed the one I have in hand now. That would account for the 90+ days between purchase and check cashed. Just a theory, and since I didn’t know better to get a serial number, it’s all speculation. He also wouldn’t respond to emails or follow up phone calls 8 months out when it seemed like I should be getting close. And it happened at the same shop to someone else who’s active on this site. So a lot of circumstantial evidence pointing towards fuckery. I’m happy the wait is over, the shop was super busy today, and I didn’t see a point in making a scene.

Good times from here on out. Thank you everyone for posting to entertain the rest of us through the wait.

so you have no clue as to when he actually mailed it? To Mike’s point, it would determine whether your app was pre or post 41f. That’s all.

Edit: Stamp dated 6/26/17, stamp in hand 7/6/2017. So excited, didn’t even know what day it was.

Mike and Andrew: no idea when he actually mailed everything; first NFA item. On the bright side, there weren’t any problems with the paperwork. The idea was to be way pre 41F by purchasing in April but when I found out my check cashed date was 7/27, figured I didn’t make the cut off and expected to submit additional docs per the new rules. FWIW, one more data point for everyone.

Mike, this will make you happy! I have found my first confirmed POST 41F approvals. 2 Form 4 Trust silencers purchased July 18th 2016, mailed July 28th 2016.

    Approved July 10th, 2017

Awesome! I just mailed in a second one on Friday for a 556 can. Submitting for. 762 in two weeks so I’ll update again once I have some check cashed dates. Hopefully once they get into the purchase slowdown we start to see wait times shrink significantly…

This looks like a nice thread to stay on top of. I made it through the 41F madness with with my two cans, both took 369 days from purchase to in-hand. I have two post 41F cans in the system Jan and March of 2017. I am very hopefully that once the pre 41 F traffic is done, we will see a steep drop in approval times.

Got the call from my Dealer yesterday. Form 4 Individual (post 41F) was approved on July 7th. Pleasantly surprised as I had actually called for an update on July 7th and was told that my application was still “pending.” Dealer said this was the first “New Stamp” they had seen so far. They seemed surprised the application went through without any issues. Spreadsheet has been updated.

    Mailed 8/2/16
    Check Cashed 8/7/16

11 months to date from cashed to approval! Looks like the approval times are dropping.

Awesome, so great to see. Looks like all individuals so far though…I’m “assuming” the process for a trust is the same just every responsible person treated as an individual.

I believe that the trust submissions spend time in some sort of “legal” department to verify they exist(someone posted something about this forever ago). With the background check for everyone and the extra verification individual forms should be slightly lower on wait times. Just my assumptions as well though.

I know we all wish we could update the process – one major part being Trusts and people that aren’t first timers through the process shouldn’t require the same effort…

For example…you could look up my trust and see that I’ve been approved for other items already…then just run a report back to that date for any changes.

        but I’m just a management consultant…what do I know

Well if you look up 479.63(c) of the Consolidated Federal Code which you can find on the ATF web site, you would see that the trust documentation can be replaced with a certification memo if the trust was used for an approved in the prior 24 months. I am not saying this will speed up the application, but I am sure hoping it does. I just sent in a form 1 packet using the certification memo. I will definitely be letting you know if it works any faster or if there are any problems.

Or just do what I did. Don’t have trustees at time of purchase. And amend trust later. That would speed up the process.

Yeah totally shocked!! I sent an email to the dealer expecting that the stamp would arrive sometime in September. He responded within 5 minutes with one word “Approved”.

So far it looks like mainly individual post-41fs are getting approved, I’ve seen a few trusts scattered but not sure

with the number of trusts submitted on this site vs individual I do find it odd the amount of individuals approved compared to trusts for post 41F. I was under the assumption that it was all in 1 stack with no reason as to what gets approved when. how ever I remain hopeful in the fact that I am an individual form 4 in late September hopefully not too much longer. I called on Tuesday and was told one more month but who really knows. with the data the ASA sent out in the email with there only being 30000 pre 41fs left and aprox 50000 post 41f left in 2016 this was in May when they were supposed to be processing 8000 – 10000 weekly. if that was the case worst case says 10 weeks would have them all done… its been 7 if you don’t count any in may which logically they should be almost done with 2016 how ever that is clearly not where we are. so I guess its all just lies lol

spot on lol. I think there were a lot of Form 1’s included in the 8-10k number that weren’t properly accounted for. I just bought a condo so I at least have some form of distraction for the next few months…but damn I want my 10/19 (m16)

oh who knows. I’m still happy that any post-41f stuff is coming through and that the pre-41f bubble is almost popped. I know there are still a bunch out there – probably sitting on a slower examiner’s desk. It seems to be luck of the draw with who gets assigned a certain stack. Just buy parts the kill the time. I got an 11.5 SOLGW upper yesterday that I plan to use on the M16 eventually. Breaking it in with the SBR lower this weekend

It is possible the ATF has moved towards examiners specializing in Individuals/Trusts/1s or 4s. If they are having specific examiners only do individual forms while others do trusts it would explain the speed that individuals are getting approved. It doesn’t appear as if the one stack thing is true.

or like any gov job you have 4 ppl standing around 1 person working their a** off, the trust ppl and like shhwoooo I think ill take a 40 hour break lol honestly I think all of the work except signing the form is prolly contracted out to random firms that took it on as contract work. one company in who knows where cashes the check puts in in a pile, sents that pile to another company just to enter it into some kind of system ( prolly the same system use to shuffle cards at a black jack table in vegas) then they send the forms to the atf who then prolly shuffle the deck more just because the house always wins. one the atf pulls your form they prolly send it out to another company that will back ground check you which makes no sense because your ffl does the same thing. then once that comes back good they send it back to the aft where it will be sent back to the first person cashing the check just to make sure uncle sam gets his 2 hundo im fairly surprised its not about tree fiddy at this point. then finally the aft gets it back and signs it and mails it to the post office just to do 3 circles around the persons house who bought the nfa item before it gets sent to the ffl/sot dealer. to me this process is the only way this is taking this long.

Long time listener, first time caller.
Got several cans on order this week, figured I might as well go big.

The guy at the shop shared some numbers but I am taking them with a huge grain of salt.

    He said:
-The ATF currently processes 7.5k-10k applications a week.
-For the first half of 2016, they received 250k applications
-For the second half of 2016, they received 30k-50k applications. Same for the first half of 2017.

I find it hard to believe only 60k-100k applications have been submitted in the past year, seems really low.

Regardless, I am prepared for a long wait.

Um…Not sure how accurate his numbers are, but I wouldn’t be surprised. People went into a panic the first part of 2016. Anyone who was even THINKING about buying an NFA item hurried up and bought theirs prior to 41f. So normal purchasing for the entire year of 2016 got condensed into the beginning of 2016. Naturally the buying dropped off after. Also in 2016, once Trump was elected everyone held off on buying suppressors assuming the HPA would pass quickly. Another telling point is how bad the gun industry (suppressor manufacturers especially) is hurting. People aren’t worried about gun rights taking a hit so they aren’t out buying every gun and accessory they find (well, your average consumer. People like us will still buy everything we can, lol).

I hope he is right, because I just submitted 2 form 4s in May 2017.

    Purchased on 8/23/16
    Form 4 mailed 8/23/16
ATF says form 4 received on 8/25/16 (called on 7/21/17 and was given this info)
    Check cashed 9/16/16
Received error notice on 7/18/17 apparently my dealer used the pre 41f form ? That’s what he says. Forms filled out and mailed on 7/19/17
Called atf on 7/21/17 to inquire about any delays from this and was told shouldn’t hurt me as they were still processing July 2016 forms. I guess they do some pre screening? My first NFA purchase so I’m not sure how it all works. A copy of my form 4 was in the error package and already had my photo scanned to it so maybe that’s something.

I can believe it. My dealer said they went from selling 4-5 per salesman, per day to 4-5 for the entire month after 41F. It should speed up tremendously!

Not to get off topic but it seems like the silencer manufacturers don’t have that big of a pie to go after and will struggle. I don’t know how big the non-consumer market is, though.

If they are processing them that quick all of 2016 should be done by the end of August. I highly doubt it will be though because everyone keeps basically quoting the ASA’s data and that didn’t seem to hold true either.

This is the million dollar question now….do they keep up at this rate or slow down now that they have gotten through the pre 41f boom. Even if they drop down to 3K-4K per week, times should still drop way down to maybe 2-3 months.

according to their website they Processed 308563 NFA forms in the year of 2015. If you divide that by 52 they averaged roughly 6000 a week that year. you mean to tell me they more than doubled their staff and resources and cant even manage to double their approval rate a week? src=”https://www.atf.gov/n/n/n/sites/default/files/media/2017/05/number_of_nfa_forms_processed_by_fy.jpg” alt=”” />

Ok, called friday and got transferred to an examiner. She said they sent an error letter to my dealer on the 20th, he confirmed that it was received yesterday. I knew what the error was (need a form for my wife reaffirming she isnt a felon alien who batters children while snorting coke). What would be nice is if we could amend or add these forms ahead of time – i realized the mistake back in November and called them to fix it, but they said i couldnt until a doc examiner already looked at my forms and sent an error letter. Such an inefficient system.

Always have been over the last year. Previous to that trusts were quicker (2 years ago and previous) That is why it is so important to not simply post, but to update the data base. Individual approvals have traditionally been 60-90 faster than trusts. It is also why it is so important to make sure when you do enter into the data base that you make sure you enter the data in the right category. Posts are using “one of” type of approvals where the data base will give you a trend. Overlay the individual and trust information on the transfer track and you will see the difference.

Bought suppressor from Silencer shop Aug 3,2016. It’s a form 4 via a trust by silencer shop. Check cashed on Oct 21, 2016. When should I expect it? Seems every time I call atf for a followup it keeps increasing in time.

I see a lot of the form 4 individuals being approved, but what about the form 4 trusts being approved? I have not seen very many approvals for those. Could it be that more people went the individual route instead of the trust route? I have can that I with a check cashed date in Jan 2017. I am hoping I get approved before hunting season.

Hate to tell you this Hankers20, Unless some magic happens at the ATF you don’t have much of a chance for this hunting season unless you are hunting October, November or December. My check cashed 10/31/2016 and I still haven’t gotten it yet. I am hoping it comes before my end of September hunting season.

Just an update from my call today for a status on two submissions.
Form 4 submitted the 3rd week of Aug 2016 is still pending and its looking like Sept 2017 for approval.
Form 1 submitted the 3rd week of Sept 2016 is still pending and I was told it would likely be Oct 2017 for approval.
If this hold true then I am looking at 13 months from submission to approval and getting past 41F craze is not speeding thing up as some might think. I suspect that there was a large number of submissions from the pre 41f forms that are having to be corrected and resubmitted. These are likely going to the top of the pile as they come back in and slowing the process.
I guess one way to look at this is that I will be getting some early Christmas gifts this year:)

I have a feeling we’ll see them approved before then. I really can’t imagine them taking that long – unless the ATF reduces the # of people doing approvals. that’s essentially the same time frame as pre-41. we’ll see though.

Unfortunately I fall in the “I suspect that there was a large number of submissions from the pre 41f forms that are having to be corrected and resubmitted. These are likely going to the top of the pile as they come back in and slowing the process.” I met with my dealer, signed where I missed a signature and off it went Wednesday (8/2/17) overnight back to the atf. Was also told that in these cases that my dealer had to send back any F4 for any reason that the turn around time was 7-10 days. My cock is getting hard just thinking about fondeling my addition, but I’ll update on reality when I actually have it in my hands.

    Speed picking up? Maybe?

    Suppressor (trust) purchased 10/27/16
    Check cashed 11/10/16
Per call to NFA this morning, was approved yesterday 8/10/17 (you could tell by his tone he was surprised)!

Still waiting on a Form 1 trust from 8/4/16 … operator said they’re just starting to get into August.

I find it very hard to believe they still have 100K July forms pending unless there were a TON of people who had issues or errors in their forms that needed to be corrected. That’s definitely likely though as I’m sure plenty of people rushed their forms to get them submitted on time.

    I guess I’ll chime in,
    Form 4 individual
suppressor purchased (balance paid) and in dealer’s hand 9-16-16
purchased stamp through Silencer Shop kiosk 9-16-16
check cashed on 11-1-16 thanks silencer shop 🙁 don’t know why it took a month and half to clear!
called ATF and talked to Laura and she volunteered all the info that is already on here without me asking, so she must get hundreds of the calls a day/week. Laura said i would be looking at least 2 more months till it probably would be approved.

Bought two suppressors on 15 Aug 16, an AAC M4-2000 and a AAC Ti-rant 45.
Sent the forms 4 on 17 Aug 16 using identical trust paperwork, photos, and print cards. Even paid for both with same check. The NFA Branch was really quick getting the check cashed on 23 Aug 16.
Called them up on 7 Aug 16 and found out that ONE of them was approved as of 2 Aug 16.
The mailman dropped off the stamp yesterday but of course I was at work and am going to pick it up today.
Can anybody give me any kind of logical reason why they would separate the two forms? You would think that keeping them together would make their job easier when the only differences between the two forms are the blocks that identify the items.
And yes before anyone asks, I did update the tracker already.

Yep, not a un-common process. Ive been told two different story’s about this. Because I’ve had it done to me on form 1’s and form 4’s. The most common answer given has been that “some” offices separate all applications. And that way its a double checked process. Plainly there are different ways that SOP are interpreted for each office. Ive sent form 4’s in with 2 on one form. And got them approved on different dates by a month. There is no rhyme to there reasoning. Its best to submit your shit, and forget. Then like finding a rolled up $100.00 bill in your winter coat pocket. Its a nice surprise when the mail man or your dealer calls you.

Yes, this. I’ve waited 48 years to be able to own a suppressor. Iowa passed the law last year. I waited till the first of the year to purchase one. Several months or a year wait is nothing to me. I’m just friggin glad I can legally own one!

No they just told me late August oh sorry BTW we never sent in your form so go get passport photos prints and fill out RPQs. Wasn’t exactly thrilled but I purchased it on the Sig APP program and they are the only APP dealer in my area with an SOT.

Yeah at least they just didn’t send in old forms and wait for me to get rejected. Like I said it was the Sig APP program so I got the can at a big discount. If I were to have ordered some other way I would have would up paying shipping and then someone to do a Class III transfer which are $100 in this neck of the woods.I would have been better off ordering through SS at that point.

Recommended listening: AR-15 Podcast, episode 216. In this episode they have an interview with Silencer Shop. I’m only part way through so far, but there is interesting information on cycle times and a new process they set up with the ATF.

One thing I found particularly interesting was a theory on why some post-41F applications seem to be coming in ahead of the curve.

If only true……..I have my doubts on the speculation on why the scattered approvals. If true, we would not be seeing a consistent trend on the scatter graph like we do (put in form 4 individual to really see the trend) If the approvals post 41f are happening at the rate he predicts, we should be seeing a week’s worth of approvals covering 2 months of submissions. That certainly has not been the case. Given when this audio was recorded (2 weeks ago) and the assumption that they would be completely caught up in 1.5 to 2 months, we should be seeing some 2017 submission approvals already.

But, I, like others WANT to believe as I have a Jan 2017 submission I would love to have approved before 1 Oct this year. But I am not holding my breath.

New place for anything post 41F approved…Hoping it gets some hits this week

Note the Date of Posting of the start of this thread and we still haven’t cleared all pre-41f. Based upon the recent history, you can see why I am not so optimistic.

I think 3-4 months for the remaining pre 41f stuff, definitely speculative, is about right. Then I think the average approval time will spiral down pretty quickly to about 3 months. So the Omega that I purchased 03/20/17 should be approved 11/20/17

av8tor (May 31 2017 post) looks like he wins the prize for the “most correct” prediction…he needs to change his name to Karnak!
